How to Set an Automatic Watch Winder Correctly | HISO WATCH BOX
Properly setting your automatic watch winder helps keep your watch fully wound, ready to wear, and prevents it from stopping when left unworn for extended periods.
What is TPD?
TPD (Turns Per Day) refers to the number of rotations a watch winder performs in one day. The required TPD varies depending on the watch brand and model.
At HISO WATCH BOX, we recommend setting the watch winder 10–20% higher than the manufacturer’s recommended TPD. This helps compensate for the winder’s rest cycles while ensuring your watch maintains an adequate power reserve.
Recommended Watch Winder Settings
Rolex: 900 TPD | Both (Bi-Directional) (Manufacturer recommendation: 650 TPD)
Audemars Piguet (AP): 1,000 TPD | Both (Bi-Directional) (Manufacturer recommendation: 800 TPD)
Patek Philippe (PP): 900 TPD | CCW (Counter-Clockwise) (Manufacturer recommendation: 800 TPD)
Panerai (PAM): 1,000–1,200 TPD | Both (Bi-Directional) (Manufacturer recommendation: 850 TPD)
Note: The recommended TPD and rotation direction may vary depending on the specific model, even within the same brand. If you are unsure, please refer to your watch manufacturer’s recommendations or contact the HISO WATCH BOX team for assistance.
Understanding the “Both” Rotation Mode
A common misconception is that setting a watch winder to 900 TPD in Both mode means it rotates 900 turns clockwise and another 900 turns counter-clockwise.
In fact, 900 TPD is the total number of turns per day. The watch winder automatically divides these rotations between both directions according to its programmed cycle. It does not perform 900 turns in each direction.
Not Sure Which Setting to Use?
If you are unsure about the correct settings for your watch, simply provide the brand and model to the HISO WATCH BOX team. We will recommend the appropriate TPD and rotation direction to ensure your automatic watch is safely and efficiently maintained.
